How long does it take to hike to Rio Celeste?
The full out-and-back trail is about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). Depending on your pace, the muddiness of the trail, and how much time you spend taking photos and navigating the 250 steps to the waterfall, expect the hike to take between 3 and 4 hours.
Can I visit Rio Celeste if it’s raining?
Yes, the park remains open during the rain. However, be aware of the water's visibility. If the rain has been exceptionally heavy for several consecutive days, the river might lose its blue color temporarily due to mud and sediment washing into the water.
Where is Rio Celeste located exactly?
It is nestled inside the Tenorio Volcano National Park, located about 1.5 hours north of La Fortuna and 1.5 hours east of Liberia, near the charming gateway town of Bijagua de Upala.
Do I need a 4x4 to get there?
Unlike in the past, the main road leading up to the national park entrance from Bijagua is now fully paved. A standard 2WD vehicle can comfortably make the trip to the park's main parking lot. However, a vehicle with higher clearance or a 4x4 is still highly recommended if you plan to venture off the main roads to stay at remote eco-lodges nearby.
Is it safe to visit the park?
Yes, the park is incredibly safe, closely monitored, and well-managed by SINAC. The trails are clearly marked. The biggest safety hazard is slipping on mud or overestimating your stamina on the waterfall stairs. Take your time and wear proper footwear.
Is there food at the park?
While food is not allowed on the trails to prevent litter and wildlife feeding, there are several small, highly-rated local restaurants located directly outside the park entrance and along the road to Bijagua de Upala. Here, you can enjoy an authentic Casado and before or after your hike.
