Both international airports are at a similar distance from La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano area. The most common is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, about a 3-hour drive. However, if your itinerary includes destinations like Tamarindo or Rincón de la Vieja, Liberia Airport (LIR) may be a better option for your departure. Keep in mind that rental car drivers typically add 1–1.5 hrs to the drive. We recommend booking a private transfer from San José Airport to La Fortuna for a stress-free arrival.
