Arenal Hanging Bridges: What to Expect

Arenal Hanging Bridges: What to Expect

NatureBy Carlos RodriguezPublished October 1, 2025· Updated May 22, 2026
The Arenal Hanging Bridges trail is one of the most accessible ways to see the rainforest from above. Stretching across the jungle canopy, the 16 suspension bridges let you walk at eye-level with the treetops — where most of the wildlife actually lives.
It's a great first activity on any La Fortuna itinerary: easy pace, lots of shade, and guides who know exactly where to look for sloths, poison-dart frogs, and the occasional toucan.

What you'll see on the bridges

The 3 km loop combines six long suspension bridges with ten shorter ones, all tucked into a private rainforest reserve on the north flank of Arenal Volcano. Expect early-morning howler monkey calls, hummingbirds at every heliconia flower, and — if you're quiet — three-toed sloths hanging motionless a few meters away. The highest bridge sits about 45 meters above the forest floor, which is exactly where many birds spend their whole lives. Binoculars help, but the guides carry a spotting scope too.

When to go

Early morning (7:30–9:00 am) is the sweet spot: wildlife is most active, temperatures are cool, and the bridges are quiet. Afternoon tours catch better volcano views if clouds have cleared, but expect more people. During the green season (May–November) the forest is lush and you'll get the occasional afternoon shower — bring a light rain jacket. Dry season (December–April) is reliable all day.

What to bring

Comfortable closed-toe shoes with good grip, light clothing that dries fast, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and your camera. Binoculars are optional — the guide usually brings spares. Rain jacket in green season. All tours we book include transportation, entrance fee, snack, water, and a certified bilingual guide. No extra cost on arrival.
