Frequently asked questions

Why does the trip end in Tamarindo rather than San Jose?+

Because Liberia Airport (LIR) is only about an hour from Tamarindo, while San Jose is four. Flying home out of Liberia saves you most of a travel day. If your ticket is fixed to San Jose, tell us and we will restructure the last two days.

What is the Arenal Lake crossing?+

A van-boat-van transfer: road to the lake shore, about 30 minutes across Lake Arenal by boat with the volcano behind you, then road up to Monteverde. It takes roughly 3 hours instead of 3.5 to 4 driving around, and replaces the worst of the gravel with the best view of the trip.

Is the first night in San Jose included?+

Not in the standard version — the itinerary as written assumes you book the arrival-night hotel near the airport yourself. We are happy to include it instead; just say so and we will add it to the quote with a couple of options near SJO.

How demanding is the rafting day?+

The Class II-III run is the family-friendly grade: continuous small rapids through rainforest, no experience needed, and it is paired with the Sloth Quest Hike the same day. If you want the bigger Class III-IV water instead, we can substitute the longer rafting trip.

When is the best time to book this itinerary?+

Mid-December to April gives the clearest Arenal views and the driest Guanacaste beach days. May to November means greener forest, fewer people and lower rates, with afternoon rain inland — Tamarindo stays comparatively dry as Guanacaste is the driest region in the country.

Can we spend longer at the beach?+

Easily, and many travellers do. Adding two or three nights in Tamarindo or moving to a quieter beach such as Samara or Nosara is a straightforward change. Send us the itinerary with your preferred split between inland and coast and we will requote.
