La Fortuna vs Monteverde: Which Should You Visit?

Travel GuideBy Carlos Rodríguez · Founder & Lead Guide, Fortuna ExpeditionsPublished July 22, 2026· Updated July 23, 2026
If you only have time for one, choose La Fortuna for adventure, hot springs and easier logistics; choose Monteverde for cloud-forest wildlife, ziplining and cooler weather. Many travelers visit both — they're about 3 hours apart and connect easily.
As an Arenal-based guide I'm not fully neutral, but here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

Why Choose La Fortuna / Arenal

La Fortuna wins on variety and comfort: an iconic volcano, natural hot springs, the waterfall, rafting, and reliable sloth sightings. It's warmer, the town has more restaurants, and it's the best first base in Costa Rica.

Why Choose Monteverde

Monteverde is the cloud forest: misty trails, quetzals and hummingbirds, the original hanging bridges experience and world-class ziplining. It's cooler (bring a layer) and the drive in is bumpier.

How to Visit Both

The classic route links them by road or the scenic jeep-boat-jeep across Lake Arenal (~3 hours). Do La Fortuna first, then Monteverde, then the coast. Our Arenal + Monteverde packages stitch it together with transport included.
