It is a small beach town on the Guanacaste coast with an offshore reef that breaks the incoming swell, which makes the bay calm, shallow and largely free of rip currents — the reason it is often named one of the safest swimming beaches in the country, and a good choice for families. The town is compact enough to walk, so most visitors do not rent a car; a private transfer in and out is usually the simpler arrangement.
