Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is about four hours from San José by road, on Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo and then Route 36 down the coast. The Caribbean also runs on an inverted calendar: February, March, September and October are its driest, clearest months, which is worth knowing if you are timing this leg against the Pacific side of the trip.
